Become A PMF

2018 Application

UPDATE:  The PMF Class of 2018 application announcement opens at Noon (Eastern Time), Monday, October 23, 2017, and closes at Noon (Eastern Time), Monday, November 6, 2017. The closing date of the application has been extended from Wednesday, November 1, to Monday, November 6, to provide adequate time for applicants in areas impacted by recent natural disasters (e.g., Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Jose) to submit their applications for this year's recruitment cycle; this extension applies to all applicants. Such impacted applicants will be:

  • prompted to self-certify if a natural disaster prevents them from obtaining and submitting the required and supporting documents (if applicable) for their application under "Step 4: Upload Documents",
  • contacted by the PMF Program Office on how and when to submit such documents, and
  • must complete all other steps of the application process and submit prior to the extended closing of Noon (Eastern Time), Monday, November 6, 2017.

The PMF Class of 2018 application will open at Noon (Eastern Time), Monday, October 23, 2017, and close at Noon (Eastern Time), Monday, November 6, 2017.  NOTE:  The opening and closing times are at Noon (Eastern Time).

Once the application opens, you will be able to access the PMF application via a job opportunity announcement on USAJOBS ( by searching for the key words "Presidential Management Fellows"; a direct link to the announcement will be posted below once it launches. The USAJOBS announcement will include detailed instructions on how to apply. You do not need a USAJOBS applicant user account to apply for the PMF Program.

When the application opens, you must submit a resume and transcript (and/or alternative), and supporting documentation for any of the following that apply to you:

  • requesting reasonable accommodations,
  • claiming veterans' preference, and/or
  • claiming Native American/Indian preference.

We strongly encourage you to be proactive by preparing all required documents prior to the application launch date. For example, you may need to consult with your academic institution on the process for obtaining a transcript (and/or alternative) beforehand. Please review the Application Tips for specifics on resumes and transcripts.

How to Apply

The PMF Program solicits applicants annually via an announcement on USAJOBS ( The announcements will include detailed instructions on how to apply.

Below are general steps to preparing and submitting an application. These steps are subject to change.


Prepare Before You Start
Allow 3-4 hours to complete the entire application to include the biographical information, document submission, and the on-line assessment. Please review the Application Process and Application Tips webpages for additional preparations.


Applying for the PMF Program
From USAJOBS (, search the key words "Presidential Management Fellows" for the announcement or go to the announcement directly here:


Check System Requirements
Check your system prior to starting your application to ensure you meet the specified requirements. Various browser and system requirements can be found under Application Process.


Begin the Application
Follow the instructions to create an applicant user account on the Apply Site of the PMF TMS (Talent Management System). Have your documents ready for submission. The application requires a transcript (and/or alternative). Please follow the transcript requirements and request from your academic institution early. Review the Application Tips section for additional information. 


Submit Veterans' Preference Documents (if applicable)
If claiming veterans' preference, follow the instructions during the application. Additional information can be found under Veterans' Preference.


Submit Documentation
All applicants must submit a resume and transcript (and/or alternative). Upload documents under the corresponding document type of the file. Applicants requesting a reasonable accommodation must submit supporting documentation.


Complete the On-Line Assessment
The on-line assessment takes approximately 3 hours to finish, which includes a scored writing part. Please review the  Assessment Preparation Guide for additional information. The Guide is made available shortly before the announcement opens and is removed when the application closes.


Certify and Submit Application
Consult the announcement before certifying responses and submitting a completed application. Applicants can only submit one application and cannot make any edits (except to personal contact information).


Application Review
During the application process, you will be able to review the completed application (with the exception of the on-line assessment). You may make changes to any items, other than the on-line assessment once it is completed, prior to the announcement closing date and before final submission.


Check Application Status
Log back into your applicant user account on the Apply Site of the PMF TMS to check your status.

We highly encourage applicants to apply early during the application period.

Applying to the PMF Program does not guarantee a PMF appointment.
